Farmington Gardens sells many varieties of Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua, along with a handful of hybrid cultivars. While both Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua cultivars offer long-lasting, cool-weather blooms, they vary in their cold hardiness, size and growth habits. They also have different flower types. Depending upon the variety, camellias can thrive in either full sun or part shade. They prefer well-drained soil. For best results, we also recommend applying mulch around their roots to keep them cool and acidic fertilizer after blooming.
Camellia sasanqua, also known as the Winter Blooming Camellia, tends to have a greater spread than Camellia japonica. At maturity, Camellia s. can reach 2 to 12′, depending on the specific cultivar. Their flowers begin opening in late fall and will continue into spring. Flowers are typically 2-4″ in diameter and can be single or double, but are generally not fragrant. While both species prefer partial sun, Camellia s. can tolerate full sun better.
Camellia japonica, also also known as the Japanese Camellia, is the standard camellia most people are familiar with. Strongly upright, Japanese camellias can grow into small trees. Their blooms will appear in late winter and continue through mid-spring. The flowers are usually quite large and showy. Camellia japonica reaches a mature height of around 6-12′ feet, although they can reach a height of 25′ under ideal conditions. Their leaves are also larger, typically about 4″ long, and more leathery.
Japanese camellias begin blooming a month or two later than winter blooming camellias although the timing can vary by cultivar. Japanese camellias have larger flowers than winter blooming varieties. Their flowers may reach up to 5″ across and are partially or fully doubled. The flowers come in many colors, including white, pink, red and mixed red and pink, and are lightly fragrant.
